Medical Device Engineer

Medical Device Engineer: Prototype a Health Device for a MedTech Startup. A 4–8 weeks Intravarsity career experience (30–50 hours) for school and undergraduat

You'll work with a medtech startup to design a wearable health monitoring device — from sensor selection to data pipeline to regulatory strategy. The startup's biomedical engineers mentor you through the same product development process they use to bring devices to market.

Design and prototype a medical sensing device with a real medtech startup. Integrate biosensors, build data pipelines, and navigate FDA regulatory considerations — real health innovation.

Who it is for

High school, secondary school students & undergraduates. Interest in medicine, engineering, or biology.

Weekly plan

Week 1: Clinical Need & Sensor Selection

  • Meet the medtech startup and understand their clinical focus
  • Study biosensor technologies — optical, electrical, chemical
  • Define clinical requirements and user needs for your device
  • Select sensor components and design the measurement architecture

Week 2: Circuit & Firmware Design

  • Design the electronic circuit with signal conditioning
  • Write firmware for sensor data acquisition on ESP32/Arduino
  • Build a data pipeline from sensor to cloud storage
  • Review your design with the startup's hardware engineer

Week 3: Prototype & Data Analysis

  • Build a functional breadboard prototype
  • Collect and analyze sensor data with Python
  • Validate accuracy against reference measurements
  • Iterate on design based on data quality and usability

Week 4: Regulatory & Presentation

  • Study FDA device classification and 510(k) pathway
  • Write a brief regulatory strategy for your device
  • Present your prototype to medtech founders and biomedical engineers
  • Receive Proof-of-Work credential and medtech recommendation

What you produce

  • Working medical device prototype
  • Engineering design document
  • Regulatory strategy brief
  • Medtech startup recommendation
  • Intravarsity Proof-of-Work credential
