Fashion Tech Innovator: Design Smart Wearables for a Fashion Tech Startup. A 4–8 weeks Intravarsity career experience (30–50 hours) for school and undergradua

The future of fashion is smart. You'll work with a fashion tech startup to design a wearable technology product that's both functional and fashionable — combining sensor technology, textile design, and user-centered product development.

Design wearable technology products blending fashion with embedded electronics — sensors, e-textiles, and companion apps. Work with a fashion tech startup to create the next generation of smart wearables.

Who it is for

High school, secondary school students & undergraduates. Interest in fashion, tech, or product design.

Weekly plan

Week 1: Wearable Tech Landscape & Concept

  • Meet the fashion tech startup and understand their product vision
  • Study current wearable technology — smart fabrics, e-textiles, biosensors
  • Conduct user research for your target market segment
  • Design a wearable product concept with form factor and interaction design

Week 2: Technical Design & Prototyping

  • Select sensors and components for your wearable (heart rate, motion, temp)
  • Design the electronic architecture and data flow
  • Create a bill of materials and cost estimate
  • Build a low-fidelity prototype with breadboard electronics

Week 3: Software & Companion App

  • Write firmware for sensor data acquisition
  • Design a companion app interface in Figma
  • Plan data collection, storage, and privacy compliance
  • Integrate hardware and software for a demo-ready prototype

Week 4: Product Launch Pitch

  • Create professional product photography and a demo video
  • Build a go-to-market strategy and pricing model
  • Present to fashion tech investors and hardware designers
